Why Do Plagues Happen? (Lectionary Monday)

Plague and sickness can drive us from our sins and put things in proper perspective. In the OT, God sent plagues to save His people from slavery. In the NT, God crucified His Son to save you from sin, death, and the devil. All that God does, He does to save His people. If you start with Christ, everything that happens might be seen as ultimately good, too, by faith.

What is Faith? (What’s UP? Wednesday)

Faith trusts that God is good in Christ, and that He saves sinners. The Canaanite woman knew that Jesus was for her and that He had to save her, that He wasn’t going to be any other God than her savior. The insults and deafening silence didn’t matter. What mattered was who Jesus is and what Jesus does. He’s the Son of God, and He saves. Even her.

This week’s Introit shows us, from Psalm 25, that it’s the same God throughout Scripture. In it, we ask God to remember His lovingkindness and mercies from *of old*.

The God Who Tells You No – to Save You (Lectionary Monday)

It doesn’t matter that Jesus has called her a dog, it doesn’t matter that He’s insulted her with a racial slur. It doesn’t matter because she knows something about Him: He was in Tyre and Sidon, in the Gentile region, for her. So when God tells you “No,” when it feels like He’s ignoring you, understand that before you even ask Him for help, He’s there. For you.

The problem with “Name It and Claim It” and prayers, is that we turn the gift into a work in order to control God, and make Him be the God we want Him to be. But we forget that because of Jesus, He’s our Father and we are His children. Because of Jesus, God is happy to hear our prayers. Because of Jesus, everything He does, He does for our good.

Not the ordering part, but knowing that Jesus is such a God that His words do what they say. Faith is not that the guy orders Jesus but that he knows Jesus’s words do, deliver, and gift what they say — for you and for your salvation.
