Lent is not an excuse to be grumpy or gloomy. When you fast, be merry, be happy! Nobody should know you’re in Lent. And your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. If it’s all about your sacrifice and how much you’re giving up for God…then that feeling you get about what you’ve done is your full reward. Be somber on the inside, and joyful on the outside.

Lent is not about what you’re giving up. It’s not about your fast (it IS a fast, but that’s not what it’s about). Jesus is going to Jerusalem where He will be mocked, spit upon, flogged, beaten, and ultimately crucified…for you. That’s what Lent is about. Drop everything that can get in the way of you focusing on Him and receiving more of His gifts.
