Summary of the Christian Faith – Philemon 4 & 5 (Bible Study Friday?)

Faith and love and their connection to one another is essential for the Christian faith. Paul says that’s what he’s heard so much about Philemon. Love in the Christian life comes as a fruit of faith in Christ. Faith in Jesus; love for others — that’s Christianity! We believe that Jesus died for us and we love other people.

When Your Church Opens (What’s UP Wednesday)

Churches are reopening again. What does this mean for you? First, whether you go back is not a test of your faith. If you’re at risk or worried, stay home a while longer. Second, social distancing when we are around each other is how we love our neighbors right now. Third, now is a good time to volunteer. There’s extra work to be done for churches to be open.

Maundy Thursday is “Love Others Thursday”

When you know who you are, and Whose you are, you don’t have to worry about being in the top spot. You can love others as He has loved you. Jesus is God, all things are His, and He serves others with His whole life. Only when you know who and Whose you are — the Father’s beloved child — can you look at others, love them, and put their needs before your own.

Fear and Dealing with Fear in Others (Bad Theology Tuesday)

If you’re not afraid, use your not-fear to love others and build them up. Help them out. Bring them along. We’re all going to react to circumstances in different ways. But perfect love — His love — drives out fear. His love enlivens us to love others…who may be afraid. Tell them it’s going to be ok. Because it IS going to be ok — in Jesus Christ.

Law & Gospel of Helping Others – Gal 6:2-6 (Bible Study Thursday)

It seems contradictory: Help others carry their burdens / You should carry your own burden. But when you apply law and gospel the passage, it makes sense. We love others best when we help them carry their burdens. But if you think you’re all that and other people should carry your burdens…no way. Carry your own load! Stop worrying about others.

What Your Pastor and Church Need from You (What’s UP Wednesday)

Churches are full of sinners who have flare-ups. They do stupid, hurtful things. The only hope they have is for you to show them mercy and love. Your pastor needs you to treat him (and the rest of the church) with the same mercy and grace that you expect God to treat you with. From Jesus to you, and from you to others — including your church and pastor.

Ep. 6: Good Works…Are Still About Jesus

It makes for viral social media statements to say that not only do good works not save you but they’re harmful to salvation. But it’s totally not true. Necessary doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be forced to do something. It can also mean that it just happens through you, necessarily, and make you love it. Nobody is saying that sinning is great, you should go out and sin more! But bragging about how we are fulfilling the law, demeaning others for not talking enough about good works, measuring of other peoples’ good works…all of it pulls away from Christ. Our peace is not in saying we should talk more about doing good works. Our peace is found in Christ forgiving sinners and making us so holy that good works would manifest themselves.

Ep. 8: Don’t They Know it’s the Third Use of the Law?

Once upon a time, there was a controversy among Lutherans. (Shocker!) One camp said the Law has no place in the life of the Christian anymore and good works will spontaneously spring forth without any sort of instruction or guidance. But when we work to set aside the Law, to free ourselves from the Law’s curse, we forget that we already ARE free of the Law’s curse, in Christ. Jesus didn’t need the Law to command or threaten Him about how to best love God and us, but He still kept it. And because we are not yet perfect in this life, we still need the Law to guide us and show us what love looks like.
