Why Jesus Came into the World (Bad Theology Tuesday)

Jesus did not come into the world to be your friend. He didn’t come to be a hero. He didn’t come to be a revolutionary. Jesus came into the world to die. It’s that simple…yet that profound. Everything in the universe that happened was about Jesus’s holy life and bitter sufferings and death for you. That’s what the Bible and Christianity are all about.

Judging in Corona-land (Bad Theology Tuesday)

God is the only one who judges. When you judge others (or they judge you) it doesn’t matter. The only judgement that matters is the Son of God, dead on the cross for you. Everything else pales in comparison. What’s most important is the suffering and death of Jesus. That’s the only judgement that matters, and it’s the one you need to give to others, too.

Jesus Quarantines Himself — to Save You (Lectionary Monday)

Jesus escapes death by stoning from the Pharisees by fleeing from them. God hides Himself — quarantines Himself — to save you by taking on your sin on the cross. He won’t escape on Good Friday. Jesus social-distances Himself from the Pharisees in this week’s lesson in order to make it to the cross, where He will die to save you.

Merry, Happy, Rejoicing, Lent Sunday (Fun Word Friday)

It’s almost Pastor Borghardt’s favorite Sunday of the entire year! There’s so much joy that can’t be contained over Jesus’ saving us in Lent that the liturgical color changes from violet to rose! Be comforted! Be happy! In spite of all trials, troubles, viruses, sickness, and even death itself, He’s got you. He’s going to save you. He already has. You’ll see!

How Do We Know Our Interpretation Is Right? (What’s UP? Wednesday)

First, the reason we look to the Scriptures at all is because they’re the inspired Word of God, and they tell us about God — the God who gave up His Son, who died and rose again. Second, what is in the Scriptures centers around the suffering and death of Jesus for us. And third, when we read them, it’s always going to be their proper context(s). Scripture interprets itself.

Triskaidekaphobia – Should You Be Scared? (Fun Word Friday)

The thing you need to ask when about superstitions is: Is Jesus alive? Did He die for you? And did He rise again? Because Christ died and rose from the dead, that means that God is good for you every day. No matter what happens in your life, it’s going to work out just fine. You are the baptized. Jesus is going to carry you through, one way or another.

Lent Gone Legalistically Wrong (Bad Theology Tuesday)

The decatastrophe of Lent occurs when we make Lent about ourselves — our change, our focusing on God, our doing things differently. We either enslave ourselves to some laws or to what we’re NOT doing (and how that’s so much better). Either way, it’s the Law ditch. Repent of making Lent all about you, and fix your eyes on the suffering and death of Jesus.

Temptation of Jesus is about JC for you (Lectionary Monday)

The devil doesn’t care about your little, piddly sins. He’ll drag you into them, sure. But that’s not his big concern. The big concern of the devil, the thing that he most wants you NOT to do is believe that Jesus died for your sins. He wants to get you to trust in something other than Jesus. And here, he wants Jesus to be some other god than the One who dies for you.

Meat Your Neighbor on Meat on Friday in Lent (Fun Word Friday)

You are free. If you think it might help with your Christian devotion to cut out meat in Lent, great! Do it. And if you are triggered by the idea of giving up meat for Lent, then you’re free to keep on eating it. What you are not free to do is mock your neighbor or intentionally tempt them with what you know they’re fasting from in their freedom.

Ash Wednesday (What’s UP? Wednesday)

Lent is not an excuse to be grumpy or gloomy. When you fast, be merry, be happy! Nobody should know you’re in Lent. And your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. If it’s all about your sacrifice and how much you’re giving up for God…then that feeling you get about what you’ve done is your full reward. Be somber on the inside, and joyful on the outside.
