Joy that No One Can Take Away (Lectionary Monday)

We’re a little disappointed and sad we don’t get to see the resurrected Jesus like the disciples did. But when we see Him on the Last Day (or our last day), we will have joy that no one may take away. That’s the joy that begins — not with you deciding to be happy — but with the death and resurrection of Jesus. A joy centered on the Gospel, upon Jesus.

St. Anselm and Atonement Theories (Theology Tuesday)

Atonement theories are ways that theologians express how that Christ saved us. The early church advocated the Ransom Theory, in which Christ pays a ransom to the Devil for us. Christus Victor, in which Christ dupes the devil and death is undone, was popular until the 12th century. Then, Anselm saw Christ’s death as satisfying the justice and wrath of God.

Thomas, Unbelief, and the Forgiveness of Sins (Lectionary Monday)

Don’t miss the comfort here in the story of Thomas. The God who could condemn us for our unbelief doesn’t. Instead He comes to us in the midst of our fear and doubt, giving peace. And it’s all wrapped in the forgiveness of sins. Those words enliven the very faith to trust that Jesus truly is alive. You are at peace with God, and your sins are forgiven in Christ.

Tune In Sunday! (Fun Word Friday)

Church attendance on the Sunday after Easter usually tanks. From the Introit: Like newborn babes crave spiritual milk, so we all….skip church? It’s the most ironic Sunday to be staying home. We’re all staying home these days. So this week, make a point of watching your church’s stream of Sunday’s service! Make an appointment to get the Lord’s Supper. Tune in!

What Easter Means (Lectionary Monday)

The resurrection of Jesus means that our faith is not in vain. It means that we’re not crazy people. Everything that Jesus said is true! Easter means that death is done. Sin has been answered-for. By faith in Him, we’re saved from our sins. We have nothing to fear in life. Everything God does is done in the context of Jesus’s death and resurrection for us.

Triskaidekaphobia – Should You Be Scared? (Fun Word Friday)

The thing you need to ask when about superstitions is: Is Jesus alive? Did He die for you? And did He rise again? Because Christ died and rose from the dead, that means that God is good for you every day. No matter what happens in your life, it’s going to work out just fine. You are the baptized. Jesus is going to carry you through, one way or another.

Ash Wednesday (What’s UP? Wednesday)

Lent is not an excuse to be grumpy or gloomy. When you fast, be merry, be happy! Nobody should know you’re in Lent. And your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. If it’s all about your sacrifice and how much you’re giving up for God…then that feeling you get about what you’ve done is your full reward. Be somber on the inside, and joyful on the outside.

Quinquagesima and what Lent is really about (Bad Theology Tuesday) – A Higher Things® Video Short

Lent is not about what you’re giving up. It’s not about your fast (it IS a fast, but that’s not what it’s about). Jesus is going to Jerusalem where He will be mocked, spit upon, flogged, beaten, and ultimately crucified…for you. That’s what Lent is about. Drop everything that can get in the way of you focusing on Him and receiving more of His gifts.

“Jesus Split Death Wide Open” Easter Sunrise 2019

Death. He’s your enemy. The enemy we’re all afraid of. No one wants to die. We’re not too afraid of the devil, we’re generally not too afraid of our sins either. We should be. But the fact that one second your here and the next your not, well, that’s just terrifying!

Text: Ex 14:10–15:1

Preacher: Pastor Aaron Fenker, Bethlehem and Immanuel Lutheran Churches, Bremen, KS
