Denying Yourself and Taking Up Your Cross

What does it mean to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus? Remember the context of this statement. To deny yourself here is to put away what you think you think, feel, and know about God on your own (skewed by sin). Let your mind be shaped by the actual Word of God. Trust only in the suffering and death of Jesus for salvation. There’s your cross.

Do Christians Have to Be Happy? (Fun Word Friday)

God made you the way that you are and put you in the place He put you because He loves you. He doesn’t need you to be someone else for Him to love you. Baptism doesn’t change your personality, it makes you a new creation. There’s plenty to repent of within us being us. But the only thing that saves us is not how happy we are, but Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

How Forgiving Should We Be? (Bible Study Thursday)

Jesus forgives every sin in His suffering and death. So, what about us? Being in Him, being loved by Him, being forgiven ourselves…we should gladly forgive those who sin against us too. If we forgive with Jesus’s forgiveness, then there’s no end of the mercy, grace, and forgiveness we have for others. Pray for your enemies and for help to forgive them.

D’ya Ever Wonder If God Loves You? (Fun Word Friday)

We all do it. We look up at the sky and wonder if God really loves us. If he cares, or is mad at us. Don’t look at yourself. And don’t try to figure out what He’s up to. The way that you can know for sure that God loves you is to look at Good Friday. On Good Friday you see the death of God…for you. Does God love you? Look at Jesus, dead on the cross for your sins.

The Lord’s Supper and the Cross (What’s UP? Wednesday)

The cross is where your salvation was won. The Supper is where your salvation is delivered. The sacrament delivers the cross to you. The remembrance of the Supper is not that you remember the cross but, that in the delivery of the Body and Blood of Jesus, God remembers the cross. We need God to deal with us in the suffering and death of His Son for us.

Watch Your Boasting (Bible Study Thursday)

All the things you are tempted to boast in which are not the cross of Christ — whether it’s your life change, your decision, or how much much better you are than you used to be — are all great things to do (good job!). But none of them help you stand before God. Only Christ saves you. Everything else is varying degrees of of not-Jesus. Only Jesus saves you.

The Needy in Church First! – Gal 6:10 (Bible Thursday Thursday)

As a church, as a people, as someone helping someone else out…consider first those in the faith. Before you help anybody else, help those in the faith, the baptized. You have been died-for, die for others. You have been loved, love others. First and foremost, those in the family of faith. And then, when you have more time and resources, help others too.

Jesus: The Armed Robber (What’s UP? Wednesday)

Jesus describes Himself today, to a world that doesn’t believe in Him, as an armed robber. That’s right. The world has you, the devil has you. That’s your situation. You believe and accept things that are sinful as normal. But Jesus has invaded your world and He has stolen you, robbed the devil of you. He overcomes Satan for you. Not by force…but by the cross.

Fear and Dealing with Fear in Others (Bad Theology Tuesday)

If you’re not afraid, use your not-fear to love others and build them up. Help them out. Bring them along. We’re all going to react to circumstances in different ways. But perfect love — His love — drives out fear. His love enlivens us to love others…who may be afraid. Tell them it’s going to be ok. Because it IS going to be ok — in Jesus Christ.

How Do We Know Our Interpretation Is Right? (What’s UP? Wednesday)

First, the reason we look to the Scriptures at all is because they’re the inspired Word of God, and they tell us about God — the God who gave up His Son, who died and rose again. Second, what is in the Scriptures centers around the suffering and death of Jesus for us. And third, when we read them, it’s always going to be their proper context(s). Scripture interprets itself.
