Out of Context Tuesday: The problem with Jonah – A Higher Things® Video Short

God sent Jonah to Nineveh to preach repentance to the people. Jonah didn’t just want to go there, he didn’t want those sinners to be saved. And when the people of Nineveh repented for their sins, Jonah was actually angry about it. We have a God who not only forgives sins, but who forgives dirty, rotten, undeserving sinners who are probably just going to go and sin more anyway.

Mondays in the Psalter

Mondays in the Psalter – Psalm 119:153-160: Disgust for faithless? Really?

Resh
153 Look on my affliction and deliver me,
for I do not forget your law.
154 Plead my cause and redeem me;
give me life according to your promise!
155 Salvation is far from the wicked,
for they do not seek your statutes.
156 Great is your mercy, O Lord;
give me life according to your rules.
157 Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,
but I do not swerve from your testimonies.
158 I look at the faithless with disgust,
because they do not keep your commands.
159 Consider how I love your precepts!
Give me life according to your steadfast love.
160 The sum of your word is truth,
and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

Lectionary Monday: The God who saves before you ask him – A Higher Things® Video Short

Jesus with the Widow at Nain shows us what kind of God we have: God has compassion and saves us before we even ask! God isn’t God to help you improve your behavior or be a better person. He takes on your flesh, dies for you, and speaks life into your sin-dead body, just as Jesus does with the widow’s dead son in yesterday’s Gospel reading…and just as your pastor does when he preaches the Gospel in the stead and by the command of Christ.

Bible Study Thursday: Lawtherans and do you really know the Law? – A Higher Things® Video Short

You who say you love the Law and think it should be preached more, have you actually *heard* the Law? When the Law applies to other people more than yourself, is used to hem in the Gospel, or obsess about a personal improvement…that’s not actually God’s Law. Only when the pure law is preached with all its severity — when it kills — can the Gospel make you truly alive.

The Largely Catechized Life

communing rightly is a gift of God

“35] The treasure, indeed, is opened and placed at everyone’s door, yea, upon his table, but it is necessary that you also claim it, and confidently view it as the words suggest to you 36] This, now, is the entire Christian preparation for receiving this Sacrament worthily. For _since this treasure is entirely presented in the words, it cannot be apprehended and appropriated in any other way than with the heart. For such a gift and eternal treasure cannot be seized with the fist. 37] Fasting and prayer, etc., may indeed be an external preparation and discipline for children, that the body may keep and bear itself modestly and reverently towards the body and blood of Christ; yet what is given in and with it the body cannot seize and appropriate. But this is done by the faith of the heart, which discerns this treasure and desires it.”

The Cure for all your worries – A Higher Things® Video Short

Worrying has become a way that we show that we care about something. But God has clearly told us NOT to worry. If God’s taken care of the animals, how much more is He going to take care of you? How do you know? The suffering and death of Jesus. Nothing in the universe happens apart from God’s love for you in Christ crucified for you.

Mondays in the Psalter – Psalm 119:145-152: The Joy of Meditating on God’s Law

Qoph
145 With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord!
I will keep your statutes.
146 I call to you; save me,
that I may observe your testimonies.
147 I rise before dawn and cry for help;
I hope in your words.
148 My eyes are awake before the watches of the night,
that I may meditate on your promise.
149 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;
O Lord, according to your justice give me life.
150 They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose;
they are far from your law.
151 But you are near, O Lord,
and all your commandments are true.
152 Long have I known from your testimonies
that you have founded them forever.

Out of Context Tues: God doesn’t need another little angel (Heb 1:14) – A Higher Things® Video Short

Children don’t die because, “God needed another angel.” Angels and people are two different things. Because of what Christ did for you, you are actually *greater* than the angels. To become an angel after death would be to become something that’s less than what you already are. God sent His Son to take on human flesh. You are one for whom Christ died.

Lectionary Monday: War in Heaven (Revelation 12) – A Higher Things® Video Short

God v. Satan. People imagine the war in heaven as a dramatic scene of superheroes going at it. But it’s all over in just one verse. God so beats Satan, that Satan ends up doing what God wants him to do. God is so powerful that He can make even evil turn out for good, especially for those who are in Christ.
