A little leaven leavens the whole loaf. A little bit of works added to the Gospel ends up making the salvation about works you do. Either salvation is 100% by grace alone, or it’s not. If your justification depends on one tiny thing, ANY thing in addition to Jesus alone, it ruins the whole thing. Don’t settle for anything other than Jesus Christ and Him crucified for you.

“To be sure, it is true that those who despise it and live in an unchristian manner receive it to their hurt and damnation; for nothing shall be good or wholesome to them, just as with a sick person who from caprice eats and drinks what is forbidden him by the physician. But those who are sensible of their weakness, desire to be rid of it and long for help, should regard and use it only as a precious antidote against the poison which they have in them. For here in the Sacrament you are to receive from the lips of Christ forgiveness of sin, which contains and brings with it the grace of God and the Spirit with all His gifts, protection, shelter, and power against death and the devil and all misfortune.”

Don’t get mad at Chick Fil A, it’s just a chicken company. But there is a lesson here: the world wants you to be with them, to be like them, living in a universe where everything is tolerated EXCEPT your Christian faith. The world can accept any message but the one that Christ alone saves them from their sins. That’s what this is ultimately about.

Look at who does the talking in this parable. The goats talk all about themselves and their works. They have lists upon lists of good works they’ve done. The Lord is the One who points out the sheep’s works, and they even disagree with Him that they did anything at all! You are the baptized. You have been made sheep. Trust Jesus. That’s what sheep do.

Bad Theology Tuesday:God can and will give you more than you can bear – A Higher Things® Video Short

Don’t use cliche theology like this to avoid dealing with peoples’ struggles. In eternity, God doesn’t just leave us in our sins. He sent Christ to save us. But in this life, sometimes He lets bad stuff happen and it does us in. Look at Jesus — He gave Jesus the Cross and it killed Him. But He raised Jesus from the dead. God works ALL things out for your good.

Jesus is coming to rescue His faithful on the Last Day. But the doctrine of the rapture is new in Christendom, and has a lot of unhelpful baggage that comes from misreading the book of Revelation and applying its symbolism into the clear texts in the Gospels and epistles. The Church has reads the unclear texts in light of the clear ones…not the other way around.

Faith saves you, but faith all by itself isn’t any good for your neighbor. The Lord would have you live out your faith in loving service for your neighbor. This doesn’t mean that works save, because faith is what’s doing the working. Faith is alive and active and loves your neighbor.

Don’t fall into the trap of worrying about the world ending through global warming, a new ice age, depletion of the ozone layer, rising water levels. The Lord will preserve creation until HIs Son comes back on the Last Day.
