The lesson of the fig tree is pretty simple. When you see the trees blooming, you know summer is near. When you see the signs of the Last Day happening, you know the kingdom of God is near. But it’s not a scary thing for you, because the Last Day is Redemption Day. Your Redemption draws near, your Jesus draws near to rescue you!

“If, therefore, you are heavy-laden and feel your weakness, then go joyfully to this Sacrament and obtain refreshment, consolation, and strength. For if you would wait until you are rid of such burdens, that you might come to the Sacrament pure and worthy, you must forever stay away. For in that case He pronounces sentence and says: If you are pure and godly, you have no need of Me, and I, in turn, none of thee. Therefore those alone are called unworthy who neither feel their infirmities nor wish to be considered sinners.”

Jesus kept all God’s Commandments, for us — the second table of the Law (4-10), AND the first table (1-3). This includes first commandment too. Jesus had no other Gods before His Father, for us. He feared, loved, and trusted in God above all things, for us. He believed perfectly, for us. And yet we cling to our believing as the one thing we must do to be saved.

Whether Jesus was born on December 25 or January 6 or whatever date doesn’t change the fact that He WAS born. And He did live. He lived for you. He suffered for us, and He died for you. Getting the date right isn’t as important as the truth that when Quirinius was governor of Syria and Augustus was Caesar, a virgin gave birth to the Son of God who came to save you.

Not for Christians. For us, that just the beginning of Christmas! Advent reminds us that the Lord is coming and prepares us for His arrival, because He’s coming to save us all!

God could punish us for what we do and don’t do. Is that the kind of God you believe in? That’s the kind of God you’ll have on the Last Day too. But the Gospel shows a different God than that, One Who doesn’t treat us as we deserve, One Who sets all the punishment we deserve on the Cross.

The foolish virgins did the math and measured out just enough oil for an on-time Wedding. The wise virgins knew they never had enough on their own. What’s the oil? Doesn’t matter. Whatever you think you have checked off “enough” of (church, Sunday School, good works, faith, etc.) to get yourself into the Wedding Feast on the Last Day…you don’t.
