Christians across all denominations have no problem with baby Jesus in the manger. But a lot of them are horrified by images of crucified Jesus on the cross. But the nativity scene is only good and happy because that cute, little Baby grows up to die on the cross for you. Who wants to look at that? But apart from faith in Christ crucified, you cannot be saved.

Family gatherings during the holidays can end up being huge messes. When you have to deal with *those* people (and you know who *those* people are!), remember the suffering and death of Jesus. His coming and arrival, as God in the flesh for you — and them — is the reason why you’re celebrating in the first place. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

The world has lost their stuffing celebrating Christmas, or at least their version of it. It’s everywhere, and has been for months! But all of it can’t help but point to the birth of Christ, even when it’s done for the wrong reasons. They all inevitably point to one day above all other days, a day in which the world changed because God the Son was born to save us all!

This time of year, people spend a lot of time trying to debunk Christian beliefs, like Mary’s virginity. But the actual words used in the Bible don’t leave any wiggle room. The miracle of Christmas is not that some maiden had a son, but that a Virgin conceived and gave birth to the Son of God, who lived and died to save you from your sins.

A lot of times we think the more serious and somber we appear, the more religious people will believe we are. But joy is a fruit of the Spirit and a perfectly reasonable feeling to have when we realize all that we have to rejoice in because of the Gospel, especially in Advent. Christ is coming — to save you! You’re free to be happy about that and find joy in His gifts!

We talk a lot about Christian freedom. But what is it? Freedom from the Law is not freedom TO sin. It is freedom from the condemnation of the law’s damning you, and threatening you, and the cycle of trying to earn God’s favor to be saved. That freedom is to finally love and serve your neighbor, without fear or obligation, as Christ has loved and served you.

Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas, it’s all about getting ready for the Lord’s coming to you. So when can we start celebrating Christmas? Traditionally, liturgically not until December 24. But you’re free in Christ to decorate anytime…just remember that this is still the preparatory season and Christmas is the beginning of a 12-day celebration!

A lot of Christians take offense at the use of “Xmas”, believing that “Christ” is being “X-ed” out and intentionally removed from “Christmas.” But that’s not really what’s going on if we look at history and the use of “X” to abbreviate the word “Christ.” Of course we want to keep Christ in Christmas, but we should do so in an intelligent and historically faithful way
