Blah blah blah … you’re a sinner … blah blah blah … Jesus died for you. Every. Single. Week. Why? Remember that we’re up against the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh. God calls us to receive His gifts in word and sacrament each week because we need Jesus every single week.
Why do we do the things we do in church? Does the style matter? God’s word is not like any other word. It’s does something unique. It makes sinners holy. The style, the things that we do, sing, and wear in church matter because help teach us that God’s Word is doing something incredible.
If God gives you something, He wants you to use it and benefit from it. He gives you His name. He intends for you to call upon Him in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. The Second Commandment isn’t “don’t use God’s name” but “don’t misuse God’s name.” His name is powerful, and when we used for good, good comes from it.

If someone sins against you, it hurts you. It’s not fair. If you sin against someone else, it hurts them. Still not fair. God isn’t concerned with fair. He’s concerned with good and evil. Sin is evil. It breaks stuff. When God works good to forgive and heal, that’s not fair either. He puts all your sins and the sins of all the world on Christ and punishes Him so that you may have His consolation.

Going to church isn’t about being better than everyone else. It’s about receiving the holiness that God gives there. Holiness can’t come from our works. God sets the standards, but He also fulfills them, and then gives you the reward in word and sacrament. If God makes you holy, then you are.
God’s not crazy. He gives abundant gifts to you to make you holy. This week on The Largely Catechized Life, Pr. Harrison Goodman takes us through paragraph 87 of the 3rd Commandment in Luther’s Large Catechism. It’s there that we learn that God gives you all His gifts to make you holy.

This week on The Largely Catechized Life, Pr. Harrison Goodman introduces us to the Third Commandment in Luther’s Large Catechism. We can’t find holiness in ourselves, but only in Jesus Christ.
