There’s more to life than winning the argument – The Largely Catechized Life #23

Honor your father and mother that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. This doesn’t mean you’ll die younger if you talk back. It means there’s more to life than winning the argument. Sin breaks stuff, and we’re so blind to that fact that we sometimes fail to see how much damage it can do.  God gives His law not just to condemn our sin, but to reveal to us something we’d fail to figure out on our own.

God works through sinful parents – The Largely Catechized Life #22

Obeying sinful parents is a tough thing. The 4th commandment is not just God telling you to deal with it. It’s Him promising to work through the parents He gives you, even if they’re sinners.

The Largely Catechized Life: God gave you your parents

God gives His law because He wants to see you taken care of. It’s easy to see in the first table of the law. God commands us to find salvation in Him and His gifts. It’s still true in our neighbor. God commands you to love and honor your parents. It’s not because they earn it. It’s because God wants to work through them for you.

The Largely Catechized Life: Lying by God’s Name

“For to lie and deceive is in itself a great sin, but is greatly aggravated when we attempt to justify it, and seek to confirm it by invoking the name of God and using it as a cloak for shame, so that from a single lie a double lie, nay, manifold lies, result.” Pr. Goodman discusses what that means in our lives.

The Largely Catechized Life: Your dining room is stupid

If God gives you something, He wants you to use it and benefit from it. He gives you His name. He intends for you to call upon Him in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. The Second Commandment isn’t “don’t use God’s name” but “don’t misuse God’s name.” His name is powerful, and when we used for good, good comes from it.

The Largely Catechized Life: God doesn’t care about fair

If someone sins against you, it hurts you. It’s not fair. If you sin against someone else, it hurts them. Still not fair. God isn’t concerned with fair. He’s concerned with good and evil. Sin is evil. It breaks stuff. When God works good to forgive and heal, that’s not fair either. He puts all your sins and the sins of all the world on Christ and punishes Him so that you may have His consolation.
