Infant Baptism – Scriptural AND Historical (What’s Up? Wednesday)

 

 

Why do Lutherans baptize babies? Because it’s what Scripture teaches and what the Christian church has always done. If baptism is a thing you do, then you better make sure you do it right and know as much about it as you can possibly learn! But if it’s a thing God does TO you and FOR you, then most certainly babies can and should be baptized.

There’s probably no worse observation of Christianity than it being a bunch of rules. You couldn’t get Christianity more wrong than that! Yes, there ARE rules, there IS the Law. And the Law makes us die to the idea that we can save ourselves by following a bunch of rules. But Christianity is all about the Son of God’s suffering and death for you and in your place.

Why It’s Good that Jesus Ascended (Lectionary Monday)

 

 

Because Jesus ascended to the Father, now there’s no mountain or church that you have to go to and sit down and have a conversation with Him. Instead, He and the Father have sent the Holy Spirit to tend to the world. It’s actually to our advantage that there’s no place we have to drive or make a pilgrimage to see Jesus. We have better than that with the Spirit!

God made you the way that you are and put you in the place He put you because He loves you. He doesn’t need you to be someone else for Him to love you. Baptism doesn’t change your personality, it makes you a new creation. There’s plenty to repent of within us being us. But the only thing that saves us is not how happy we are, but Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

How Forgiving Should We Be? (Bible Study Thursday)

 

 

Jesus forgives every sin in His suffering and death. So, what about us? Being in Him, being loved by Him, being forgiven ourselves…we should gladly forgive those who sin against us too. If we forgive with Jesus’s forgiveness, then there’s no end of the mercy, grace, and forgiveness we have for others. Pray for your enemies and for help to forgive them.

Baptizing Children and Waterless Places (What’s UP Wednesday)

 

 

When we have kids, we want to have them baptized. But we need to remember that baptisms need to be watered. Baptizing and teaching go together. Baptizing your child is a commitment to continue to teach and raise that child in the faith. If you don’t plan to attend church or instruct them in the faith, it’s worse for the child than if you didn’t baptize at all.

Baptismal Birthdays (Theology Tuesday)

 

 

Today is Pastor Borghardt’s baptismal birthday! Why do Lutherans celebrate such a day? Because it’s the day you were born from above, born again. Not by a decision you made but by a washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. In baptism you died with Christ, and you rose with Him too. You are clothed with His righteousness. This day changed your life!

Joy that No One Can Take Away (Lectionary Monday)

 

 

We’re a little disappointed and sad we don’t get to see the resurrected Jesus like the disciples did. But when we see Him on the Last Day (or our last day), we will have joy that no one may take away. That’s the joy that begins — not with you deciding to be happy — but with the death and resurrection of Jesus. A joy centered on the Gospel, upon Jesus.

How Forgiving is Jesus? (Fun Word Friday)

 

 

When reading Matthew 12:32 we worry about blaspheming the Holy Spirit and committing the “unforgivable sin.” But verse 31 says that Jesus forgives all sin! God forgives ALL sins in the suffering and death of His Son. Outside of Him, reject Him, if you don’t believe in Him…you pay the price for your sins. And in Him, every sin is forgiven.
