Jesus could’ve said anything to the paralytic man…and He forgave his sins. This tells us that our real problem is that we need forgiveness.

This quote needs to be understood in the context of giving comfort to troubled consciences. When you’re faced with a lose-lose decision that is going cause sin no matter what you do, you can boldly plow through knowing that you have a Savior. This is not to advocate sin or say that sinning is ok. But when you sin (and you will), you have a Savior.

Baptists have better potlucks. Pentecostals are more zealous. Catholics live more pious lives. Presbyterians know the Scriptures. But what the Lutherans have in spades is comfort for troubled consciences in the forgiveness of sins won by Christ crucified FOR YOU. When you fall into sin, that’s what people need. And this is what Christianity is really about.

Did you really think the world likes you? Do you seek the praise of the world? You shouldn’t. The world hates you. They don’t just want to take churches’ tax-exempt status away, they want Christian churches shut down. This shouldn’t be a surprise. They don’t hate the Church because of her stance on marriage. They hate the Church because they hate Jesus. The world can handle any god BUT the One Who suffered and died for sinners.

How should you read the Old Testament? Look for Jesus. How should you read the New Testament? Look for Jesus. What is it saying about Jesus? What is it saying about what God in Christ has done for you? Don’t read the Scriptures looking for instructions on what you should do and not do, or how you can be a better person. Read the Scriptures and look for Jesus. That’s what it’s ALL about, says Jesus in John 5:39.

Where does the law end, where does it stop? It hangs on Jesus — His holy life, His bitter sufferings and death. On the cross, Jesus is the end of the Law. On the cross, Jesus saves you from the Law and its condemnations. On the cross, the Lord hangs all of the Law – both the first table (love God with your whole heart) and the second table (love your neighbor as yourself). All of it rests upon Jesus first. Both tables of the Law are done by Jesus for you.

“I forgive you” is the very voice of the Gospel. The Lord has placed your pastor in your life to speak this word of forgiveness to you, so that you would know for certain — as certainly as Christ has spoken to you, through your pastor (because He has) — that your sins are forgiven. And when he does absolve you, it’s not his forgiveness. It’s God’s forgiveness. He’s just the spokesman.

The Christian faith is not about your life change. It’s not about you becoming a better person. it’s not about you being a better you, and having your best life now. The Christian life is about freedom — freedom from sin, from death, from the power of the devil, from a conscience that’s dragged down by all the bad you’ve done. Freedom – not TO sin but freedom from sin, freedom from wanting to sin. We must be steadfast in this Gospel!

Word order doesn’t seem to be the big deal when it comes to baptism — believe and be baptized, baptize and teach. What we can see is that baptism and faith go together and should not be separated from each other. Is baptism necessary to be saved? Yes. Then does NOT being baptized damn a person? Well, not necessarily.
