Alcohol is a gift from God — in its proper place, at the proper time. If there are no laws prohibiting it, then you’re free to use your judgement wisely. But if there are laws prohibiting it for people until they’re a certain age, then you should respect the law of the land. And violation of it is sinful because it breaks the 4th Commandment.

At the last supper, when Jesus took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to the disciples…in that cup was NOT grape juice. It was wine. “Grape juice” didn’t even exist in the ancient world. That’s how He instituted it. Things get changed because we worry about alcoholism, drinking, etc. Alcohol was given by God as a gift. The sin to watch out for is drunkenness.

A wedding with no wine?! What a disaster! Why is this suddenly Jesus’s problem? It’s not His hour — His hour when He dies for you on the Cross. He’s not so much about saving weddings as He is about saving us. This also points us to the greater reality when the fruit of His hour is delivered to us, when He serves His good wine to us in the Lord’s Supper.

Peter’s confession is about Jesus, who Jesus is, what kind of God is He. He’s one who suffers and dies for our sins. If you confess a Christ who doesn’t suffer and die, you’re confessing a different Jesus than the one Peter confessed. This isn’t about Peter. And it isn’t about the words apart from the confessor. It’s about the Lord’s Words given to be confessed.

There’s no salvation for those who live in the works of the flesh. Don’t believe that what you do can save you. Do these sins, live in these sins, and you’ll go to hell according to God’s Law. Living this way sets yourself outside the faith of Jesus, and then you get what you want: a universe without Jesus.

First, the Lord told us there’d be wars and rumors of wars until His returns. This shouldn’t surprise us. Second, all of this occurs in the context of the Father who loves us in the giving up of His Son. We don’t live in a universe where God doesn’t care for us. Expect it to get worse before the end. But in the end, when it can’t get worse, He comes for us, to save us.

John knows that Jesus has no business getting in the water that day. John’s baptism was for repentance and Jesus had no sins to repent of. But Jesus counts Himself a sinner, for you. Jesus putting Himself where you are, even in a baptism He doesn’t personally need pleases the Father. This is how God is — He is for sinners. He is for you.

Our natural inclination is to do things in the way of the Law with lists of things we need to do and improve upon. While those are probably good things to do, they’re not going to save you or ultimately change your behavior. What causes real change is the Gospel, starting from the point that you have been forgiven and set free in Christ. Now…how are you going to live?

Incense is used in worship in both the Old and New Testaments, historically in the church, and it will be in heaven. It’s not “Roman Catholic.” The prayers of the saints are symbolized in Scripture by the smoke of incense around God’s throne. Now, you may not like it…but that’s not the point. That’s a conversation for another day. It’s biblical and we are free to use it.

Does a baptism only count if it’s by immersion, just like Jesus was? Well…what’s baptism about? If it’s about you fulfilling something that God requires of you to show your obedience and your dedication then it’s all about…you. It’ll never be enough. But if it’s about receiving forgiveness of sins in His Name with the water, then it’s the gift He’s promised in Scripture.
