Episode 66: W is for Wake

This week, the pastors, Sandra, and Kate discuss death and funerals. During the season of Lent, as we remember that we are dust, it is fitting to contemplate our own demise and that of our loved ones. Why do we still die, despite Christ’s victory over death? How do we participate in Christ’s own death and resurrection as Christians? Paul says in Romans that we are baptized into Christ’s death so that we too can be raised from the dead. In that way, death and resurrection is the mechanism of our salvation.

Episode 65: V is for Volumizer

This week, the fearless four discuss the season of Lent. What is the purpose of Lent, since we are to repent of our sins daily? Why do we give up pleasures and specific sins during Lent? What is the purpose of fasting? What is our focus during this holy season? Fasting and bodily preparation are indeed fine outward training, but our faith is in Christ. Ultimately it is the gift of faith in Christ, the gift to believe despite our unbelief in the forgiveness freely offered to us in Jesus that is our focus during Lent. And while that is our weekly and daily focus throughout the year, Lent provides an amplified concentration on our Savior and His specific work of salvation for us sinners.

Episode 64: U is for Uncomfortable

This week, the phenomenal four discuss what happens when we become too comfortable at church. Tradition within the church is good in many respects, but sometimes we allow certain traditions to prevent us from focusing on Christ and serving our neighbor. We often need to be reminded of our sin and be made uncomfortable by the free forgiveness offered to us in Christ Jesus. This might mean the pastor has to alter certain parts of the service that we are used to or adjust the nature of our social gatherings. And while we should feel safe and loved at our own church, is it also important that we are challenged to examine our faith and confession more closely both as individuals and as a community?

Judges 5:1-6:27

Sometimes you just need a musical interlude! In this episode Pastor Eric Brown and Thomas Lemke read the song of Deborah, offering notes on the text, and observations on the place of victory tunes in times past. Then they begin the account of the next Judge in the queue, a mighty warrior in hiding, and his amusing encounter with the preincarnate Christ.

In the Backwards Life, Pastor discusses Christian music, and Thomas confuses Billy Joel and Elton John.

Episode 63: T is for TheologyBook

This week the fantastic four discuss what happens when we encounter fake theology on social media. How do we decide what is true, good theology? The internet is full of different teachings, opinions, and general ramblings about Scripture. How do you choose what is worth reading and considering? Directly prior to and during the Reformation, how were theological topics discussed and how has that changed today? Join us for a great discussion about God’s Word and what theology’s true focus should be: Christ.

Dripping With Confidence – Gospeled Boldly #42

Episode 42

Excursus on Baptism

Hello, my name is… Baptized Child of God. Pastor Brown takes the mic alone in this solo episode dealing with Baptism. He explains what happens in the sacrament (there’s certainly a lot going on beneath the surface!), and how the Word spoken over us at the font shapes our identity. It’s the culmination of the great rescue mission to pull you out of Satan’s kingdom, a work of Christ and not of yourself, and a great comfort that should give you confidence in your salvation.

Episode 62: S is for Stand Up

On this week’s episode, Pastor Riley, Sandra, and Kate talk about resisting authority. They discuss “duty” and what it means to be a Christian citizen. How should your Christianity influence your actions as a citizen of this nation and vice versa? Does serving your neighbor include protesting the government? To be a Christian, do you have an obligation to believe and advocate for certain laws? There must be a distinction between the Two Kingdoms, and between Law and Gospel, right?

Episode 61: R is for Reason

This week, Pastor Riley, Sandra, and Kate talk about why they are Lutheran and what they would be if they weren’t Lutheran. The conclusion? Most likely they would be atheists. Does it matter if you know why you’re a Lutheran? Is it important that you know why you go to that specific kind of church each Sunday? Ultimately, why do you become or remain a Lutheran? Is there just one reason, and if so, what is it?

She’s Got Him Pegged – Gospeled Boldly #41

Episode 41

[ download ]

Was it Ehud, in the Roof Chamber, with a Sword? How about Shamgar, in the Promised Land, with an Oxgoad? Or Jael, in the Tent, with a Tent Peg? In this episode of Gospeled Boldly, Pastor Eric Brown and Thomas Lemke start to get the clue that Judges is not a book for the faint of heart! They finish the story of Ehud, then learn what happens when a prophetess promises the glory of victory will go to a woman, rather than the war leader.

In the Backwards Life segment, Thomas asks for Pastor Brown’s thoughts on New Year’s Resolutions (and should we “claim this year for blessings” in the name of Christ?).

Episode 60: Q isn’t for Epiphany

On this week’s episode, Pastor Riley, Sandra, and Kate talk about the season of Epiphany and why it is such a special time in the Church Year. It is during Epiphany that Christ reveals Himself to us in His Baptism, His temptation in the desert, His miracles, and in His Word as He teaches. He reminds us constantly that He has come for a specific purpose. His hour is not yet at hand, but soon will be. And His baptism, temptation, miracles – all that He does points to His purpose. He comes to save us from our sins by dying on the cross, triumphing over the devil, and rising again on the third day. It is also in the lessons of the Epiphany season that Jesus’ personality as a human being is shared with us. In this too, we take comfort, remembering that Jesus is a real human being, not God inhabiting the body of a man, but a real human being who suffers and dies just as we do. And just as Christ rose from the dead, we too look forward to our own bodily resurrection in Him.
