Here We Stand (and Sing)

By Monica Berndt

I remember the first Higher Things conference I went to in 2015- Te Deum in Las Vegas. The first time we sat in the opening Divine Service and began to sing the first hymn, I choked up and could barely sing. It wasn’t because the hymn itself was emotional, or because the music itself was moving. It was because there, singing altogether, were over 500 high school youth, college students, youth leaders, and pastors all confessing the very same thing at the same time through the words and music of the liturgy and hymns. I still get a little choked up during the many services we have over the course of a Higher Things conference, but it is because these services are lasting, grounded in Scripture, and one of the greatest blessings of the church.

Martin Luther once said that next to the Word of God, music was the greatest treasure in the world. In all our services – the Divine Services, Matins, Vespers, Evening Prayer, and Compline – we combine these two great treasures into one. At Here I Stand in Mars Hill, NC there were 300 people boldly singing the words of Scripture that have withstood all the attacks of the Devil and the world since Creation. We confessed our sins before each other and before God and received the same forgiveness that He has bestowed on all since that first promise of the Savior in the garden of Eden. We sang the Gloria, the hymn of praise and thanksgiving, and before communion we confessed Christ’s saving work as the Lamb of God through the singing of the Agnus Dei. We heard the pastors chant the Words of Institution which takes the exact words of Jesus and sets them to music. How amazing is that, that we as the church of Christ here on earth can still proclaim these words together?

When you sing the hymns and liturgy at Higher Things, you are not just singing with your youth group friends or with the other conference attendees, but you are singing with the entire church of God just like you do every Sunday morning. Not only are these services a way for us to remain steadfast and unified in Christ’s words, but they connect us to all those who have sung these words, believed them, and who now rest with Christ in heaven. There we stand both three times a day at Higher Things and every single Sunday morning with all the saints who have gone before us, and sing the Scriptures- the promises of God to us and for us! We continue to use the liturgy and sing hymns not because they are inherently Lutheran, or because we want to be “traditional,” but because they contain the words of Jesus and they remind us of His salvation. As we begin to remember the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, let us boldly stand and sing with our congregations, pastors, and all the saints for we know that these words will remain until Jesus comes again in glory.

“The Word they still shall let remain, nor any thanks have for it. He’s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, goods, fame, child, and wife, though these all be gone they yet have nothing won. The Kingdom ours remaineth.” –A Mighty Fortress (LSB 656) v.4

Monica Berndt is a member at Messiah Lutheran Church in Seattle, WA and served as a CCV in Mars Hill, NC. She is studying music and history at the University of Washington and loves to talk about Medieval History and why she loves hymnals.

Sensory Friendly Room Thanks

Sensory friendly rooms are available for the first time at this year’s Higher Things youth conferences, thanks to a grant from the Iowa East District’s Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. The LWML district provided funding to create an area where attendees, especially those with sensory and anxiety special needs issues could step away from larger groups at Higher Things conferences and calm down for a few minutes.

“We are thrilled to offer the Sensory Friendly Room at our conferences this summer!” said Higher Things Conference Coordinator Crysten Sanchez. “The rooms have helped individuals who have sensory issues find a calm place to collect themselves, and it has been gratefully received.”

The sensory rooms are supplied with weighted blankets, white noise, lamps, devotional resources, coloring books, and other quiet activities. Attendees have been using the room at each conference so far this year.

The LWML Montana District Divide Zone also provided goodie bags to attendees at this summer’s Montana conference.

Thank you, LWML ladies, for your gifts to Higher Things!

2017 Conference Shirt Thanks

Higher Things is grateful to acknowledge the sponsor of this summer’s conference t-shirts: 1517. The Legacy Project. Each attendee at all four conferences will receive a shirt which has been provided by their sponsorship, and helps commemorate this summer’s Here I Stand conference theme.

“When we were considering sponsors for this summer conferences, 1517 came to mind automatically. When you think, ‘Here I Stand,’ you think ‘1517.’ I hope our organizations find other projects to work on together in the future,” said Higher Things Development Executive Erica Jacoby.

1517’s Scholar-in-Residence and Director of Curriculum Development, Dr. Daniel van Voorhis, will be one of the plenary teachers at the Montana conference. He will also be teaching breakaway sessions at the Texas and North Carolina conferences.

“We are really excited to have 1517 sponsor our conference shirts. Our organizations share a common love for the gospel and the comfort of troubled consciences,” said Higher Things President Rev. George Borghardt. “We’re grateful to all of our sponsors for their support as we dare youth to be Lutheran.”

The 2017 conference season kicks off next week in San Antonio, TX, and then continues during following weeks in Mars Hill, NC; Bozeman, MT; and Valparaiso, IN.

1517. The Legacy Project serves churches and the world by providing a message of hope for those broken by the church, supplying theological resources that strengthen congregations, and modeling ways of engaging the culture in a manner that is thoughtful, courageous, and Christ-centered.

Higher Things is a Recognized Service Organization of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod that holds annual youth conferences and assists parents, pastors, and congregations in cultivating a distinctly Lutheran identity among their youth and young adults.

Announcing Higher Things Confirmation Camp!

Camp 2017 logo

Higher Things and Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca are pleased to announce a new program: Higher Things Confirmation Camp! The inaugural program is to be held August 1-4, 2017

It’s time to give those catechisms some summer attention! With the busyness of summer, many confirmands go months without picking up their catechism, let alone even thinking on the content they learned in confirmation and catechesis class the year before. Before confirmands know it, they’ll be thrust right back into the swing of their confirmation studies in the fall, scrambling to recover and remember what they already went through last year. Higher Things Confirmation Camp is here to give confirmands a refresher and new insight into their Lutheran catechesis life. Over the course of a 4-day camp at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca in Solon, IA, Rev. David Kind (University Lutheran Chapel – Minneapolis, MN) will lead confirmands in their catechism study and Rev. Sam Beltz (St. John Lutheran – Oskaloosa, IA) will preside over our worship times for the week. It’ll be a week filled with edifying catechesis, distinctively Lutheran worship, and tons of outdoor fun!

At Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca, campers will enjoy numerous outdoor activities along with their worship and learning! Participants will spend time in activities such as archery, canoeing, horseback riding, rock climbing, zipping (zip line), disc golf, swimming, large-group games, campfire and s’mores, and many more! Registration is open to both groups and individuals, meaning confirmands can come with their classmates and a chaperone or register individually and be chaperoned by one of Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca’s camp counselors.

Registration will open February 1, 2017
