The Christ on Campus Chapter Challenge

We at Higher Things have been dedicated since 2006 to supporting a network of faithful campus ministries through our Christ on Campus Chapter program. We are thrilled that after five years we are now partnering with sixty-three chapters in twenty-eight states.

However, we realize that there are many more places that could be ripe for campus outreach throughout The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and many, many more congregations that may be interested in partnering with us in this way.

  • Are you looking for ways to expand your congregation’s outreach in the community?
  • Is your congregation near a four year college or community college? (Over half of all college students in the U.S. attend a community college)
  • Are you already engaged in campus outreach and would like to become a part of our chapter network?
  • Do you want to explore starting something from scratch at a local college or university?
  • Would you like to send a signal to college students that if they attend a college near you that your doors are open to them?

If any of the above applies to you, we would like to dare you to accept our CHALLENGE and dialogue with us about how you might become a Christ on Campus Chapter of Higher Things for a college campus near you.

Please learn more about how you can become a Christ on Campus Chapter here.

Is your congregation up to the challenge? Let’s talk!

As Christ Has Loved Us – Service Project

Download Bulletin Inserts Here

At Higher Things conferences each summer, we worship, we work, and we play. We receive the Gifts given to us, we grow as Christians in the study of His word, and we rejoice in fellowship with fellow Christians from across the country (and beyond!). This year, we will have the opportunity to extend the love that Christ has given to us by His death and resurrection to our fellow man in their time of need.

This summer, during each week of Coram Deo, conference attendees will have several opportunities to assemble Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. These kits provide a small bit of comfort to people in areas affected by disaster or turmoil.

Over the next few weeks leading up to this year’s Coram Deo conferences, we need to gather the items need for the kits. Here is what we need to collect for each kit:

  • One bath-size towel (approx. 52″ X 27″), dark color recommended
  • Two bath-size bars (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in original wrapping
  • One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging
  • One sturdy comb, remove packaging
  • One metal nail clippers, remove packaging

LWR has made the following requests about the items donated so that kit distribution is safe and fair to all recipients:

  • Please give new items only, except where noted otherwise.
  • Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, messages or with your congregation’s name
  • Please do not donate any items decorated with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage.

If anyone is unable to collect and ship/transport the items needed, but still would like to help with this service project, you are welcome to make a monetary donation for kit items to be purchased at each location or to go toward the shipping fund to send the complete kits to LWR. Please send checks made out to Higher Things and designated for this purpose to:

Higher Things – Coram Deo Service Project
P.O. Box 155
Holt, MO 64048

Please contact Erin Stephens (estephens@higherthings.org) to let us know what supplies we may expect and to request shipping addresses for donated supplies.

“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” – 1 John 4:9-11

A Christ on Campus Appeal: University Lutheran Chapel (MN)

ULC A blessed Holy Week to all of you!

As many of you have perhaps heard, the property associated with one of our Christ on Campus Chapters, University Lutheran Chapel (ULC) in Minneapolis, is being recommended to be sold by the Minnesota South District, in spite of the fact that ULC is one of the oldest and most respected LCMS campus ministries and is nearly self-sufficient.

ULC has served as a beacon for all of the rest of us doing campus ministry for countless years. Its influence and campus ministry legacy is quite widespread.

We at Higher Things stand by ULC and encourage your support in the following ways:

  • Pray for our brothers and sisters at ULC, including Rev. David Kind and all his students that they might not despair, and that God would give them strength.
  • Get familiar with all the source materials and information about ways to help at http://ulcmn.org.
  • Support all the campus ministries of the Synod, which like ULC, serve young people at a very vulnerable time in their life and when so many fall away from the faith.

Though we are all grieved by this recommended action and we pray it does not take place, may we all turn our focus to Christ and His Word especially during the remainder of this most holiest of all weeks. That is what ULC is all about. It is what campus ministry should be about, and it certainly is what Christ on Campus and Higher Things is about!

May God sustain Pastor Kind and all the faithful at ULC and may He be with all of you who seek to confess Christ on campuses everywhere in these gray and latter days.

Let us not forget that our gracious God has a blessed habit of turning such things (all things) into good. This week, quite literally, is the ultimate reminder of just that!
