Jesus’s name means “the Lord saves.” He is going to do His name for you! We’re on the receiving end of His saving us. That’s the way to start the new year. Repent of all the stuff that you do to try to save yourself and trust that Jesus is going to do His name for you. And then nothing in all of creation can separate you from the God who does His Name for you.

Like Simeon, you’ve received Jesus. You’ve received His Body and Blood for the remission of all your sins, so you’re ready for anything. Ready for life, death, school, work…You’re ready to take on the world, ready to be abandoned by your friends, ready for good…and ready for bad. Because you have Jesus, and so you have everything you need.

How utterly awful is today’s remembrance? Herod finds out about the birth of Jesus from the Wise Men and, to eliminate any chance of a rival king taking the throne from him, commands his soldiers to kill all the baby boys 2 years and younger. Not a happy day, but a happy day in Jesus because He died to save us all from an eternity of suffering.

St. Stephen teaches us that the Christian faith has suffering in it. It’s just the day after probably the biggest Christian celebration, and we’re already remembering the first martyr for believing and preaching that Christian faith. This is what you can expect by being a Christian. When you confess Jesus, you will suffer for it. May we be so faithful as well.

Christ’s Mass — that’s what we celebrate today! Family and friends and all of that is secondary to Christ coming into your flesh. Today is Day 1! God the Son has taken on your human flesh and blood and He delivers Himself to you on the altar today! Receive that gift first on Christmas morning. It’s the most important one!

Everyone’s a big Mary fan in December. Lutherans love Mary, too! But the big deal about Mary isn’t…Mary. The big deal is Who’s in her womb. Mary is blessed because of Jesus, because she has God in her belly. The One who is born of Mary will grow up to die for your sins and the sins of the whole world. So don’t focus on Mary, go right to her Baby.

Christians across all denominations have no problem with baby Jesus in the manger. But a lot of them are horrified by images of crucified Jesus on the cross. But the nativity scene is only good and happy because that cute, little Baby grows up to die on the cross for you. Who wants to look at that? But apart from faith in Christ crucified, you cannot be saved.

Family gatherings during the holidays can end up being huge messes. When you have to deal with *those* people (and you know who *those* people are!), remember the suffering and death of Jesus. His coming and arrival, as God in the flesh for you — and them — is the reason why you’re celebrating in the first place. Fix your eyes on Jesus.

The world has lost their stuffing celebrating Christmas, or at least their version of it. It’s everywhere, and has been for months! But all of it can’t help but point to the birth of Christ, even when it’s done for the wrong reasons. They all inevitably point to one day above all other days, a day in which the world changed because God the Son was born to save us all!
