Your pastor isn’t so worried about gaining your respect, having you like him, or getting paid lots of money (those things are all nice, of course). What your pastor wants is for you to believe the Words he preaches to you as an ambassador of Jesus. More than anything else, he wants you to repent of your sins and receive the forgiveness that is yours in Christ.

We often think that if we do enough good works, they’ll balance out our sins and we’ll get to go to heaven. Or that we owe good works to God for all that He’s done for us. But good works don’t earn our way into heaven, and God doesn’t need them from us. You know who does need our good works and our keeping of the Commandments? Our neighbors.

Sure, Jesus! I’m all for helping my neighbor…but who’s my neighbor? Our faith is not about checking boxes of good works. If that’s how you’re going about living your religion, justifying yourself by the ways you’ve helped your neighbor, you’re doing it wrong. When unbelievers are more merciful than you, it’s time to repent.

Being like St. Paul isn’t like being a new and improved, better person (though you really should still work on that…). Paul is saying that we should be like him — actually knowing and believing the Gospel, living by faith alone in Christ alone for salvation, free from the condemnation of the Law.

No one actually believes Romans 8:28 — that God is working everything out for our good. If we truly did, we would keep the 10 Commandments. Suffering doesn’t mean that God is punishing you, God is working good through it for you. How do we know? Because of the suffering and death of Jesus.

Things can snowball quickly when you start worrying. And there’s plenty of stuff to worry about, if that’s what you want to do. But you have a God who loves you and takes care of you and only has good planned for you–all in the giving-up of His Son for you. He’s going to take care of you and do what’s best for you. He’s promised, and He keeps His promises. Look to Jesus for evidence of that!

“C’mon Jesus, do that thing you do and just heal the guy!” That’s what everyone expects hin to do for the deaf guy that day. He should wave a hand over the guy and chant some mumbo-jumbo. But that’s not the kind of God Jesus is. He doesn’t do things the way we think He should — sometimes He heals with wet-willies! We couldn’t make this stuff up if we tried!
