We don’t know much about Matthias, he may be the least known of the Apostles! It’s OK that we don’t have a lot of details about his life. We know what he did — He preached the Gospel, he administered the sacraments, he baptized, he taught, he visited the sick. That’s what pastors DO. And the best pastors are the faithful ones nobody ever hears about.

People think of fasting as Roman Catholic. But Jesus says, “When you fast…” This Lent, find ways you can get “you” out of the way and focus your attention on Jesus and how to receive more of the Lord’s gifts for you this Lent. “Man does not live by bread alone but on every Word that comes forth from the mouth of God.” Fix your eyes on Christ and Him crucified.

It seems contradictory: Help others carry their burdens / You should carry your own burden. But when you apply law and gospel the passage, it makes sense. We love others best when we help them carry their burdens. But if you think you’re all that and other people should carry your burdens…no way. Carry your own load! Stop worrying about others.

Lent isn’t about you. It’s about Jesus. Turn your focus from yourself and the things you do for Jesus. Sure, we should have that focus every day of the year. But we don’t. So we have a season to help us do that. Lenten fasting and disciplines are great. But do them so that you get yourself out of the way, so Lent can be about watching Jesus go to the cross for you.

The parable of the Sower and the Seed is not about making you worry about what kind of ground you are. Focus on the Sower and the seed He sows (the Word). The devil wants to snatch the Word from you so you can’t believe and be saved. Receive the seed, and be saved. Believing is receiving!

Why exactly do we celebrate all of those feast days on the Church calendar? Who are all of these “saints” and why exactly should we care about them? And what does any of that have to do with ME?
Throughout the Church’s history we’ll find plenty of stories about saints and martyrs — men and women who died professing their Christian faith. They proclaimed the Gospel and led lives worthy of legends. Some of the stories seem like they could be the next action blockbuster. And others could be pulled from the most terrifying of horror movies! Nevertheless, they each have something to teach us.

Churches are full of sinners who have flare-ups. They do stupid, hurtful things. The only hope they have is for you to show them mercy and love. Your pastor needs you to treat him (and the rest of the church) with the same mercy and grace that you expect God to treat you with. From Jesus to you, and from you to others — including your church and pastor.

The truth is, we think we’re good people…but we’re not. We’re self-centered, we’re unfaithful, we’re…not good. If God really gave us what we deserved, it’d be a real hot mess. We are saved by the Unfairness of God. He doesn’t treat us as we deserve. He gives us forgiveness, life, and salvation…His unmerited favor. That He is good to us in this life at all is unfair.
