“I Have Overcome the World” (Lectionary Monday)

In the world, we have viruses. We have fear, tribulation, bank accounts, and schools closing without warning. “But be of good cheer,” Jesus says, “I have overcome the world.” So you have peace — with God and with those around you. Not because of anything you’ve done, but because of Jesus alone. In Him and His Word is your righteousness, peace, and forgiveness.

Higher Things Daily Reflections

Thank you!

Over the past 15 years, Higher Things has published over 5000 individual devotions. These daily reflections have been viewed on our website over half a million times! They’ve been listened to in our Reflections Daily Podcast over 550,000 times. Reflections are available in the inbox of over 1000 people when they wake up every morning and available to parishioners in the Narthex of many congregations. By our estimation, we’ve generated over 3.2 million individual Christ-centered interactions with our Reflections content. That’s a lot of Jesus crucified for you!

Help keep the Higher Things® Daily Reflections FREE!  For more than a decade, Higher Things® has provided our readers with free Gospel reflections on our website, by e-mail and downloadable as print-ready PDFs.  We want to continue this service but we need your help!  Please consider making a donation to Higher Things® in the name of the Reflections to help continue this service to our website viewers and the youth in particular.  Help us to keep the reflections free, just like the Gospel!  Consider making a donation online.

Conspiracy Theories (Fun Word Friday)

We live in a world where that’s gone crazy, especially right now. Horrible things keep happening and they just don’t make any sense. So we start connecting dots on our own. Slow down! Whether the theories are true or not, you have a Father in heaven Who gives good gifts to you and works all out things for your good. And that’s not going to change.

Philemon 1-3: An Introduction (Bible Study Thursday)

Pastor Borghardt starts a new weekly Bible study today! Philemon is a super-short book in the New Testament. It has just 1 chapter and 25 verses! So, PB should finish it by the end of summer…

Infant Baptism – Scriptural AND Historical (What’s Up? Wednesday)

Why do Lutherans baptize babies? Because it’s what Scripture teaches and what the Christian church has always done. If baptism is a thing you do, then you better make sure you do it right and know as much about it as you can possibly learn! But if it’s a thing God does TO you and FOR you, then most certainly babies can and should be baptized.

Glossary – Ep. 3 – Hymnal 101 (New Video Series!!)

Wait a second. The hymnal is full of weird words and phrases. Some of them aren’t even English! Different situations use different terms to talk about what’s going on, whether you’re learning what a touchdown is in a football game or someone yells “I object!” in a courtroom drama on TV. Thankfully, the hymnal has a glossary to explain the weird terms used in it!

ABOUT THIS SERIES:

The hymnal isn’t just a collection of songs we use for worship services. It’s a book containing a ton of resources for the faithful to use throughout the week, even at home! Pastor Matt Richard not only teaches us about the hymnal but how to make use of it in our daily lives.

Christianity Is NOT Just a Bunch of Rules (Bad Theology Tuesday)

There’s probably no worse observation of Christianity than it being a bunch of rules. You couldn’t get Christianity more wrong than that! Yes, there ARE rules, there IS the Law. And the Law makes us die to the idea that we can save ourselves by following a bunch of rules. But Christianity is all about the Son of God’s suffering and death for you and in your place.

Why It’s Good that Jesus Ascended (Lectionary Monday)

Because Jesus ascended to the Father, now there’s no mountain or church that you have to go to and sit down and have a conversation with Him. Instead, He and the Father have sent the Holy Spirit to tend to the world. It’s actually to our advantage that there’s no place we have to drive or make a pilgrimage to see Jesus. We have better than that with the Spirit!

Do Christians Have to Be Happy? (Fun Word Friday)

God made you the way that you are and put you in the place He put you because He loves you. He doesn’t need you to be someone else for Him to love you. Baptism doesn’t change your personality, it makes you a new creation. There’s plenty to repent of within us being us. But the only thing that saves us is not how happy we are, but Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

How Forgiving Should We Be? (Bible Study Thursday)

Jesus forgives every sin in His suffering and death. So, what about us? Being in Him, being loved by Him, being forgiven ourselves…we should gladly forgive those who sin against us too. If we forgive with Jesus’s forgiveness, then there’s no end of the mercy, grace, and forgiveness we have for others. Pray for your enemies and for help to forgive them.
