[…] The beginning of Lent usually means that the music turns somber as we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice and our sin that sent Him to the cross. The majority of Lenten hymns reflect this as they are composed in minor keys. The Gloria in Excelsis or other hymn of praise in omitted until Easter. We tuck our alleluia’s away. Many organists elect to ‘give up’ using mixture stops, instead relying on quieter flutes and the occasional reed. Regardless of whether your parish observes some, all, or none of these man made traditions, these observances are designed to help us consider our sinful state and our total reliance on Christ. The temptation to consider our adherence to Lenten tradition to make ourselves right with God should be avoided and is not the intent of today’s discussion.
